Landmark Judgements
State of U.P. v. Chandrika (2000):
The Supreme Court clarified that while a plea of guilty is an admission, it is not binding on the court. The court has a discretion to accept or reject the plea and must ensure that it is voluntary and unequivocal before acting upon it.
Ramanand Agrawal v. State of M.P. (2002):
This case reaffirmed that the plea of guilt must be clear, unambiguous, and made with a full understanding of its consequences. The court must satisfy itself regarding the voluntariness and genuineness of the plea before proceeding to convict the accused.
