Australia has introduced an initiative known as the MATES Scheme, which provides an opportunity for talented young Indians to work in the country for a limited period.
Overview of the MATES Scheme
The Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) grants Indian university graduates and early-career professionals the chance to work in Australia for up to two years.
Background
The MATES Scheme is part of a broader agreement called the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) between Australia and India. This bilateral framework facilitates mutual migration and mobility while addressing concerns over illegal and irregular migration. MATES is one of the key programs established under this arrangement and is set to open for applications starting December this year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: Applicants must be Indian nationals aged 30 or younger at the time of application.
- Previous Participation: Candidates must not have participated in the MATES Scheme before.
- Language Proficiency: Applicants should have strong English skills, with an overall IELTS or equivalent score of at least 6, and no individual module score lower than 5.
- Graduation Timeline: Candidates should have graduated within two years of applying from a recognized institution.
- Qualifications: Applicants need a Bachelor’s degree or higher in fields like renewable energy, mining, engineering, Information Communications Technology (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Financial Technology (FinTech), or Agricultural Technology (AgriTech).
- Educational Institutions: Graduates from the top 100 Indian universities, based on the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), are eligible.
Scheme Details
MATES will initially operate as a pilot program, offering 3,000 spots for primary applicants each year. Participants will be eligible to bring dependents, including spouses and children, who will have work rights in Australia without contributing to the annual cap.
Visa Information
Successful applicants will have 12 months to make their initial entry into Australia and can stay for 24 months from the date of that first entry. The visa allows multiple entries during this period.
