Gujarat ATS and NCB Seize 700 kg Methamphetamine in Joint Operation with Indian Navy

In a significant operation against drug trafficking, law enforcement agencies seized nearly 700 kg of methamphetamine from an international drug syndicate operating in Gujarat on Friday. The joint operation, codenamed “SAGAR-MANTHAN – 4,” involved the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Indian Navy, and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Gujarat Police.

The Indian Navy, in a post on X, confirmed the bust, stating: “In a coordinated operation with @narcoticsbureau and Gujarat Police, the Navy intercepted a suspicious vessel, resulting in the seizure of approximately 700 kg of meth in Gujarat. This marks the second major anti-narcotics success at sea by the Navy this year.”

The operation was launched following intelligence reports of an unregistered vessel carrying illicit substances entering Indian waters. Acting on the tip-off, the Navy’s maritime patrol units intercepted the boat, leading to the recovery of the contraband and the detention of eight individuals claiming Iranian nationality, all of whom lacked identification documents, according to ANI.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the operation, emphasizing its importance in the fight against drug trafficking. “Pursuing PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision for a drug-free Bharat, our agencies dismantled an international drug cartel today and seized over 700 kg of meth in Gujarat. This exemplary joint operation reflects our commitment and seamless coordination among agencies,” Shah posted on X, congratulating the teams involved.

The investigation continues, with Indian authorities collaborating with international drug enforcement agencies to dismantle the syndicate’s global network. The broader initiative, Operation SAGAR-MANTHAN, launched earlier this year, targets maritime drug trafficking threats. Previous operations under this initiative have resulted in the seizure of approximately 3,400 kg of narcotics and the arrest of 25 individuals, including Iranian and Pakistani nationals, across three cases. All accused are currently awaiting trial.

Last month, another major drug bust in Gujarat saw state and Delhi police jointly seize 518 kg of cocaine worth ₹5,000 crore at a pharmaceutical facility in Ankleshwar. This aligns with India’s “Zero Tolerance against Drugs” policy and the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan initiative.

What is Methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine, commonly known as meth, is a highly addictive stimulant affecting the central nervous system. It appears as a white, odorless, bitter crystalline powder that dissolves easily in water or alcohol. Originally derived from amphetamine in the early 20th century for use in nasal decongestants and inhalers, methamphetamine is more potent and penetrates the brain at significantly higher levels.

The drug enhances activity and talkativeness, suppresses appetite, and induces a euphoric sense of well-being. However, chronic or high doses can cause severe effects, including psychosis, violent behavior, mood swings, seizures, and muscle breakdown. Long-term use has particularly harmful effects on the central nervous system, making methamphetamine a highly addictive substance with widespread misuse potential. Abrupt cessation may lead to withdrawal symptoms lasting months.
