Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff Hosts 2024 Annual Joint Electromagnetic Board Meeting

The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff recently convened the annual Joint Electromagnetic Board (JEMB) Meeting for 2024 on November 13. The JEMB, functioning under the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC), was presided over by Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations). Senior representatives from the three Services, DRDO, DDP, and industry stakeholders participated in the event. Discussions spanned a wide range of critical topics, including joint operations and integration in Electronic Warfare, Signature Management, Emerging Technologies, EMI/EMC, Spectrum Management, and Human Resource Management.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the AI-powered e-Tarang System. This advanced tool is designed to automate and streamline Defence Spectrum planning and management, while also facilitating technological advancements in higher frequency bands. Developed in collaboration with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), the system is poised to optimize interference-free operations of defence equipment in both wartime and peacetime scenarios.
Additionally, the Technical News Letter (TNL) 2024, a publication by JCES/HQ IDS, was introduced. This document provides a forward-looking perspective on technologies that could transform modern warfare, and its content reflects substantial professional input from all three Services.
The central objective of the meeting was to foster synergy in joint electronic warfare (EW) operations and lay out a strategic plan for advancing capabilities in Spectrum Warfare. The assembly also focused on identifying future technology development and training priorities. In his Special Address, Air Marshal Mishra highlighted the critical need for integrating EW assets across the Services for operational efficiency. He commended the successful execution of the first joint EW exercise conducted in September 2024, which exemplified the ethos of “Victory through Jointness.”
