Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate the First Bodoland Mahotsav in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the inaugural Bodoland Mahotsav 15 November 2024 in New Delhi. This two-day festival is a grand celebration of language, literature, and culture, aimed at fostering peace and creating a vibrant Bodo society. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the event seeks to unite the indigenous Bodo people living in Bodoland and other regions, including Assam, West Bengal, Nepal, and international border areas in the Northeast.
Bodoland Mahotsav
- Theme: The theme of the Mahotsav, ‘Peace and Harmony for Prosperous Bharat’, emphasizes the cultural, linguistic, and educational contributions of the Bodo community alongside other communities in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
- Objective: The festival aims to highlight Bodoland’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage, ecological biodiversity, and tourism potential.
The Mahotsav also serves as a commemoration of the progress achieved since the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord in 2020 under PM Modi’s leadership. This accord marked a turning point, resolving decades of conflict in Bodoland and paving the way for other peace agreements.
The event will bring together over 5,000 participants, including cultural, linguistic, and art enthusiasts, from regions such as Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of India.
About the Bodo Tribe
- The Bodos are among the earliest known ethnic groups in Assam (historically known as Pragjyotishpur and Kamrupa). They belong to the Mongoloid stock of Indo-Mongoloids or Indo-Tibetans and are known for their distinctive culture and language.
- Language and Distribution: Linguistically, the Bodos are part of the Tibeto-Burman language family. They inhabit areas in Assam, North and East Bengal, and Burma.
- Regional Names: In the Brahmaputra Valley, they are known as Bodos or Boros, while in Lower Assam, West Bengal, and Nepal, they are referred to as Meches.
The Bodoland Mahotsav is a landmark event that not only celebrates the Bodo community’s culture and heritage but also underscores the importance of peace and unity in fostering prosperity for the region and the nation.
