A staggering 2 crore children in India are currently out of school, a crisis the government is now tackling head-on. A groundbreaking new plan is set to transform the education landscape, offering a lifeline to millions who have dropped out or never enrolled.
Key Highlights
- A massive nationwide drive aims to achieve 100% school enrolment by 2030.
- National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) centres will be established in every block.
- A new ‘NIOS Mitra’ program will provide personalized guidance for enrolment.
Bridging the Education Gap
In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s ambitious goal of 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio, the Ministry of Education is launching a monumental effort. The focus is on bringing back the millions of students who have fallen through the cracks, including over 50 lakh who fail board exams annually. By leveraging the flexibility of open schooling, this initiative provides a crucial second chance for students to complete their education and build a better future.
Education at Your Doorstep
To make learning universally accessible, the government is dramatically expanding the reach of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The plan involves setting up at least one NIOS study and examination centre in every single block across the country. To ensure reliability and accessibility, prestigious institutions like PM SHRI schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Navodaya Vidyalayas will also function as NIOS hubs. This move eliminates geographical barriers, bringing quality, flexible education closer to home for every child, regardless of their circumstances.
Personalized Support with ‘NIOS Mitra’
Recognizing that enrolment is just the first step, a new outreach initiative called βNIOS Mitraβ is being rolled out. Under this program, trained facilitators will actively connect with out-of-school children and their families, offering guidance and support throughout the enrolment process. With a special focus on marginalized groups such as tribal, migrant, and economically weaker communities, the program will be digitally monitored to ensure transparency and effectiveness. This hands-on approach aims to empower the most vulnerable students to rejoin the educational mainstream.
