A fierce academic debate has erupted at a prominent university, igniting a political firestorm over proposed curriculum changes. The controversy centers on a recommendation to erase key historical figures from the postgraduate political science syllabus, prompting urgent calls for intervention.

Syllabus Shake-Up Sparks Debate

The controversy began after a committee tasked with reviewing the MA Political Science syllabus proposed dropping chapters related to influential thinkers Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Allama Muhammad Iqbal. This recommendation follows recent student-led protests demanding the removal of a chapter on Muhammad Ali Jinnah, which was part of the newly revised syllabus under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The proposal has divided opinions, raising critical questions about the scope and direction of higher education curriculum in the country.

A Plea to Protect Academic Heritage

In response, BJP leader Jahanzaib Sirwal has formally appealed to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, requesting a thorough review before the university’s Board of Studies makes a final decision. In his letter, Sirwal emphasized the significant contributions of the figures in question. He highlighted Khan’s pioneering role in modern scientific education, which led to the establishment of the Aligarh Muslim University, and Iqbal’s enduring patriotic verse, ‘Saare Jahan Se Achha,’ as integral parts of India’s intellectual and cultural fabric. He argued that their removal would create a vacuum in understanding India’s complex political history.

The BJP leader also pointed out that the proposed omissions seem to contradict the core principles of the National Education Policy 2020. By potentially narrowing the academic discourse, the move could undermine a balanced understanding of the ideas that have shaped modern India.
