New Regulations Shake Up PG Medical Education

Seat Matrix & Bed Requirements Overhauled
Under the amended Post-Graduate Minimum Standards of Requirements (PGMSR-2023), the NMC has recalibrated the number of beds required per PG seat. For high-demand specialties like general surgery, orthopaedics, and obstetrics, both government and private colleges will now be allotted only four seats for every 40 beds, a reduction from the previous five. In departments such as general medicine and paediatrics, private colleges face a higher bed requirement to maintain their seat count, while government colleges’ ratios remain unchanged. Conversely, specialties like psychiatry and dermatology in government institutes will now accommodate more students with fewer beds, creating a new dynamic in seat availability.
New Faculty Norms and Practice Rules
