What is GATE?

Who conducts GATE?
GATE is jointly conducted by the following eight institutes:

For GATE 2027, IIT Madras is the Organising Institute. The organising institute coordinates the examination and provides the official information for that cycle.
It is therefore important to distinguish between the GATE conducting system as a whole and the Organising Institute for a particular year. GATE is jointly administered by IISc and the seven IITs; it does not permanently belong to one IIT.
Opportunities through GATE

Admission to postgraduate programmes
A valid GATE score can be used for admission to eligible Master’s programmes and Direct Doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Humanities.
GATE scores can also be used for admission to relevant doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies.
The exact admission process varies by institution. Some institutes may use the GATE score directly, while others may conduct additional tests, interviews or other selection stages.
Qualifying GATE therefore does not automatically guarantee admission.
Financial assistance
A qualifying GATE score can also be used to seek financial assistance for eligible postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
Under the current information published for GATE 2027:
- Financial assistance for eligible M.Tech. students is ₹12,400 per month, generally paid for 22 months.
- For eligible Direct Ph.D. programmes after B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc.-equivalent qualifications with a valid GATE score, the financial assistance is ₹37,000 per month for the first two years and ₹42,000 per month from the third to the fifth year, subject to the applicable rules.
These amounts are policy-based and can be revised in future years. Candidates should always verify the latest scholarship or financial-assistance rules before admission.

GATE has broad eligibility rules and does not impose a general age limit.
Under the current eligibility framework, candidates who are studying in the third year or higher of an eligible undergraduate degree programme, or who have already completed an approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, can appear for the examination.

Candidates studying outside India
Candidates pursuing a qualifying degree outside India can also appear, provided they are currently in the third year or higher or have completed a Bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.
Professional society qualifications
Candidates holding qualifications from recognised professional societies may also be eligible where the qualification is considered equivalent to B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch., B.Planning or another relevant degree under the applicable rules.

Can a candidate appear for two GATE papers?
Yes. GATE permits candidates to appear for two test papers, provided the selected papers form an officially permitted combination.
A candidate must select one paper as the primary paper and choose the second paper from the permitted secondary combinations.

Important points about two-paper combinations
A few rules are particularly important:
The candidate must have a primary paper and a secondary paper.
Only the combinations officially permitted by the examination authority can be selected during the applicable registration windows.

The standard paper contains 10 General Aptitude questions and 55 subject questions, making 65 questions in total.
General Aptitude
General Aptitude is common across the examination framework and contributes 15 marks.

Engineering Mathematics
For most conventional engineering papers, Engineering Mathematics contributes 13 marks.

GATE marking scheme
GATE questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks.
Negative marking is applicable to incorrect MCQ responses:

There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions.
There is also no partial marking in MSQ questions.

What are MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions?
Multiple Choice Questions
An MCQ presents a set of options and normally has one correct answer.
Because negative marking applies to incorrect MCQs, random guessing can reduce the score.
Multiple Select Questions
An MSQ can have more than one correct option. The candidate must select all applicable answers.
There is no negative marking for an incorrect MSQ response under the stated pattern, but there is also no partial marking.
Numerical Answer Type
In NAT questions, candidates enter the numerical answer using the examination interface instead of choosing from given options.
NAT questions do not carry negative marking under the current pattern.
How many GATE papers are there?
The number of GATE papers is not necessarily fixed permanently because the examination framework can introduce new papers or revise existing ones.
