BNS 18 (IPC 80) 'दुर्घटना' (Accident) का बचाव प्रस्तुत करती है। यदि एक लकड़हारे की कुल्हाड़ी का फाल कुल्हाड़ी से निकलकर उड़ जाए और पास खड़े व्यक्ति की मृत्यु हो जाए (बिना किसी लापरवाही के), तो यह पूर्ण रूप से एक दुर्घटना है और इसमें कोई सजा नहीं।
