336(1): जो कोई किसी मिथ्या दस्तावेज़ या इलेक्ट्रॉनिक अभिलेख… को इस आशय से रचता है कि लोक को या किसी व्यक्ति को नुकसान या क्षति कारित की जाए… या कपट किया जा सके… कूटरचना करता है।

फर्ज़ी डॉक्यूमेंट या साइन बनाना! (Forgery)। अगर कोई बैंक के चेक पर किसी दूसरे के हूबहू 'डिजिटल सिग्नेचर' या 'साइन' मार दे। या फिर ज़मीन के कागज़ों (Documents) में किसी का नाम मिटाकर अपना नाम लिख ले। जब भी कोई 'धोखा' या 'नुकसान' पहुँचाने की नीयत से कोई 'झूठा कागज़' (False Document) बनाता है, तो उसे कानून में 'कूटरचना' या 'जालसाज़ी (Forgery)' कहते हैं (IPC 463 / BNS 336)।
तुलना
Forgery (जालसाज़ी) में ‘दस्तावेज़ बनाने’ का कृत्य (Act of making false document) ही मुख्य अपराध है। BNS 336(1) ने इस क्लासिक परिभाषा को पूरी तरह से बरकरार रखा है।
